With the Autumn Equinox fast approaching , we thought we'd give you all some information about this wonderful time of year. The time that the Light and Darkness are equal to one another good and evil some say are also in a kind of balance , making a very interesting time for spellwork. A trip back in time when things were a little more difficult than our modern times now ,where things are often taken for granted (ya know that quick trip into town to grab dinner ) we often think nothing of such trips or actions because that is part of our daily life now. However if you travel back about 3000 years give or take , you'll find life was very different. People would be lugging their crops to wagons or carts and hauling them in a very manual way to and fro making sure that all was carefully sorted and stored. This is the second harvest of the year , meaning you grab your tools and head out in the fields or woods to gather the last of the berries and various other fruits and veg that are ready to be gathered and stored away for use now or later and start the prep for a step towards closing the season out, also sewing the cold weather tolerable veggies.
This also incorporates the Witches Thanks Giving, After all the hard work put into the gathering and piling and storing away all that bountiful food stuffs , it's time to do as the name suggests and Give Thanks to the GODS or THE MAKER for said bounty and all the blessing received during the year or season. Now this practice does vary slightly from region to region and culture to culture. And there were periods that it did lose its prominence in some parts of Europe until brought back by the Norse in some areas. It's interesting to note that many different parts of the world also observe this date to end their own harvest seasons such as China. On September 22nd, China closes out their rice harvest.
Some of the Gods and Goddess associated with this harvest season are as follows :
Dionysus, The greek God of wine and festivities among other things ( wink wink )
Demeter , The Harvest Goddess and her mother Persephone
Cernunos and the Green Man and of course we can’t forget the very namesake of the season itself Mabon or MODRON.
Last but certainly not least , Hekate is also associated with Mabon and mentioned in relation to the night and mysteries around the changing of the seasons.
Happy Mabon !
